Fantasia Reviews Straight Outta Fangton

The story of Peter Stone is more interesting than his name suggests. He is a vampire whose creator exiled him from New Detroit, a sort of vampire Vegas. He works a low-end job at a convenience store, making ends meet. It isn’t the most exciting life, but that all changes when Peter finds a freshly turned vampire in the ladies room of the store. Deciding to lend a hand to her, they embark on an adventure of discovery that forces him to return to New Detroit. Vampire hijinks ensue.

Straight Outta Fangton is a heck of a ride. Well-written and engaging, it will hold your interest from the first page to the last. Peter works well as a bit of an everyman, and you can’t help but cheer him on all the way. The dialogue is punchy, which helps keep the pace quick. The one-liners and observations bring Peter to life and help the reader identify with the vampire, something that isn’t easy to do. Perhaps our only warning is that we can’t recommend this book to younger readers due to some of the content.

The story works well enough as an urban fantasy, but Mister Phipps elevates it with appropriate levity and self-awareness that takes an ‘alright’ story and makes it so much more. All-in-all, we don’t think we could ask much more from a vampire-packed urban fantasy.

Though our visit to Mister Phipps marvelous world may have been brief, the entertainment endures. The comedy was solid; pop culture references amusing; the characters were endearing. Probably one of the highest praises that we can give to Straight Outta Fangton is that it already has a sequel. If you enjoy urban fantasy, vampires, and more than a bit of humor, you’ll love Straight Outta Fangton.
